WHY???????????
Is it standard? Standards are great. But if we all used the same software, all of our work would look the same.
Last I checked noone cares what video/film editor you use as long as it gets the job, within budget, and on time.
I am glad Boris got BCC, RED, & BLUE over to Vegas Pro. But, it had more to do with VP's plug-in architecture than it's platform.
What is Pinnacles' plug-in architecture like? Because BLUE will work for you regardless, as it's just a standalone application; RED can be used as a standalone application, as well.
You can even get the two to re-create many of the effects in BCC 7. If you get creative enough. ;)
Wow...StormEdit and Pinnacle. Definitely applications that were very very good at what they were designed to do...Storm/Rex Edit was almost mind-bending fast with the Canopus DV hardware...and incredibly stable. Pinnacle was constantly putting out editing products that pushed the envelope of what quantity and complexity of features could be run on the computers of the moment, and sold at a reasonable pricepoint.
Vegas is just pushing forward all the time and continues to add features and functionality that simply don't exist anywhere else...
It's funny for me to hear you comment on the perceived "second class citizen" status of your chosen NLEs because I think that Premiere/Premiere Pro users have felt a little outcast as well over the years...Avid and Apple's dominance in the most visible tiers of the industry has been through really focusing on the needs of that market segment and really well-targeted marketing and they've been very successful.
I happen to agree that the tool doesn't build the house, the carpenter does. Whatever application works best for you is the best for you.
As far as third party vendors (like BorisFX) supporting every NLE out there with their plugins, it doesn't even boil down to a choice many times as the plugin architecture is not the same across all video editing applications and some may simply be incompatible.
I do think that BorisFX may be the most flexible in this regard as the option to run RED and BLUE as a plugin or a standalone application is pretty unique.
Also, running After Effects as part of your toolbox is becoming more of a necessity, and more affordable than ever before, and of course, nearly every visual effects plugin started there...
