automatic duckWes Plate is the president Automatic Duck, Inc. (www.automaticduck.com). During his early years as an Avid editor in Seattle, Wes was known not only for his creative cutting but also for his editing speed. As the pressure for editors to add for more effects grew, his desire to streamline his workflow led Wes to launch Automatic Duck. Automatic Duck creates popular timeline translation plug-ins for users of industry-standard NLE and compositing systems, including Avid, Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro.

Automatic Duck is a family business, with Harry (Wes’ s Dad) heading the engineering effort and Jessie (Wes’ s wife) processing and shipping orders. The company has grown to a total of five people, with two engineers working with Harry on coding Automatic Duck’s many projects. Wes’s intimate knowledge of the editing industry guides the product design, assuring that Automatic Duck products are meaningful and useful to editors and effects artists.

At this year’s IBC, Wes announced the largest feature set upgrade to the company’s flagship timeline integration solution. Automatic Duck Pro Import AE 3.0 adds more than 20 new features and capabilities to streamline timeline integration between popular nonlinear editing and motion graphic design solutions.

So what does this mean for Boris Continuum Complete users? For the first time, you will be able to take Final Cut Pro or Motion projects that include Continuum filters directly into After Effects. Pro Import AE 3 lets Continuum users move their content from Final Cut Pro or Motion, directly into After Effects without compromising a single effect. BCC already allows you to install into any of the supported hosts on your system, including Final Cut Pro and After Effects. Support for Apple Motion version 1.01 will be added to Continuum soon. But the Automatic Duck solution provides yet another method for seamless workflow between multiple hosts.

"BCC already allows you to install into any of the supported hosts on your system, including Final Cut Pro and After Effects," says Boris FX founder and president Boris Yamnitsky. "The Automatic Duck solution provides yet another method for seamless workflow between multiple hosts."

Significant new capabilities include the following:

  • Third Party filter translation from Final Cut Pro and Motion (including BCC)
  • Motion Project import directly into After Effects
  • XML import from Final Cut Pro
  • Upon import, text from FCP or Avid become After Effects text layers
  • Time Remapping from Final Cut Pro
  • Import via “drag and drop” procedure
  • Support for DVCPro HD media from Final Cut Pro HD
  • Support for Avid DV50 OMF media
  • Support for Avid media digitized to multiple files
  • PSD layer import from Final Cut Pro
  • User-specified media folders (Windows)
  • Added support for Final Cut Pro sequence markers
  • Support for extended characters in media file names

With the release of this new version, Automatic Duck delivers the only timeline integration solution that can import media files from Motion, Apple's new real-time motion graphics design solution. Additionally, Pro Import AE 3.0 enables import of XML files from Final Cut Pro, greatly simplifying the once tedious task of moving content between disparate editing and effects timelines.

“Automatic Duck Pro Import AE 3.0 will be the largest, most feature rich upgrade we’ve delivered since our inception. This new release is key to our mission to provide the most complete and powerful Timeline Integration solutions for digital media artists,” said Wes Plate, president of Automatic Duck. “We’ve put significant commitment and energy into the new version of our Timeline Integration solution to make it much more compelling for existing and new users alike.”
