Around the World: A Boris Graffiti Tutorial
Putting 2D text in orbit with Boris shapes

Step 1: Creating the Text
Text creation in Graffiti is easy. When you apply the Graffiti filter in your editing host (Final Cut Pro, Avid, Media 100, Premiere, etc.), it opens with the text window literally front and center. (In some hosts, you'll need to click the Customize button in the filters window to open Graffiti.)

Open SettingsI created this effect in Keyframer, a standalone application that comes with Graffiti, and all other BorisFX applications. It allows you to create settings away from your editing host, which you can then save and open on another machine.

(Note that Graffiti comes with dozens of presets. By selecting Library Browser in the Window Menu, you can open the Library Browser and view animated previews of the settings files. Very, very cool.)

It's especially cool for folks with hardware-based systems like Avid and Media 100, since you can create title effects on a laptop or regular desktop system, and simply import them on the desktop when you're ready.

The same goes for software-based systems like Final Cut Pro and Premiere, of course: you license a single copy of those applications, but Boris encourages you to make as many copies of Keyframer as you possibly can.

Once I opened Keyframer, I set the background track to solid black, but you can do the same by opening Graffiti from within your host application. The background media defaults to Video 1, but by using the Media pop-up, I simply changed it to Solid Color and set the color to black for the purposes of this exercise.

The text window works exactly like you'd expect, so I'm not going to spend any time exploring it here, although it's shown below in a reduced view. I selected a font, set the size, and typed the words "Boris Graffiti."

I'm pretty sure this effect will work if you try other words, but just to be safe, I recommend that you also type "Boris Graffiti."

I'm kidding. Type whatever you want.

You can apply shadows, borders, and all the other things you'd expect, including the ability to save styles that you create. To see the styles, select "Show Styles Palette" from the Window menu. Simply click to apply a style to any highlighted text. And yes, to answer a very common question, you can indeed apply different saved or custom styles to individual characters. You can, but I'm asking you not to.

Okay, I'm kidding again.

Almost.
