Using BORIS Tools to Generate a News Show Opener - Part 3

led effect

The next tab contains the text wrap functions. We won't be utilizing any of these functions for this title but as you can see, we can control the page width, margins and also the vertical and horizontal direction of which the text will read.

The next tab is for controlling the fill of the text, which as you can see in the screenshot can be either solid or a gradient. We're going to disable the fill for this style as we want to stroke the edge of the text but leave the fill transparent. Just click on the "Fill On" button to disable the fill.

On to the next tab, where we have the controls for the border or stroke that is applied to the title. Let's enable border 1 by clicking on the checkbox at the top of the column of edge style tabs. And yes, the fact that there are 5 edge style buttons means that you can actually combine up to 5 unique styles per character! By default, the edge border is black, but we're going to change that to blue. You can enter values directly in the individual RGB buttons or you can click on the color chip and select the color from the system color picker. Both methods will deliver the same result.

We'll set the following characteristics for this text:

  • color = 27r, 83g, 249b
  • edge style = bevel
  • edge width = 2.18
  • edge opacity = 100
  • highlight color = white
  • shade color = black

The last tab in this window is for setting the shadow that is applied to each character. Again, as in the border tab, there are controls for up to 5 unique shadows per character. Options for the shadow style include color, angle and a pop-up that determines whether the shadow is cast, drop or solid. We're not using a shadow for this title so we'll leave this at its default setting of off.

With the text selected, let's take another look at the style palette. To apply a factory preset style to the text, just select the text and click on the Style Palette button to access the presets. Then select any preset and click on the apply style button and the selected style is applied to the selected text.

We'll close the Style Palette without applying a change as we've already set up the style that we want.

So, now that we've completed the title generation, let's go back into the FCP timeline and animate the show title. To do that we just click on the apply button located in the bottom right corner of the Title 3D Generator window.

Because this is a generator, nothing has been added to the timeline at this stage. We have simply instructed the Title 3D to generate a piece of text with a particular style. To add the text to the timeline, we have to trim the slug containing the title in the source monitor and then drag this as a new video layer above the video layer containing the treated map image in the sequence. Let's set the trim so that it is 10 seconds long, which is the length of the sequence that we are creating, and drag this generator from the Source monitor window into the timeline.

The next step is to position the text within the lower 3rd of the frame. To do this, we'll click on the controls tab in the source monitor and click on the Position X/Y button, then immediately click and drag in the Record monitor to position the text so that it is centered in the frame along the X axis and in the lower part of the frame along the Y axis. The values that I have used are 960X x 840Y.

Now for some animation. We'll set the title so that it fades on over a few frames, then appears to move toward the camera slowly. To do this, we first place the CTI at the start of the clip, then we go to the Title 3D control panel in the Source monitor, and create keyframes for Scale and Opacity parameters. Set the Opacity to 0 and the Scale to 0. Then move the CTI forward 1 second and set keyframes again for Scale and Opacity, setting the Opacity at 100 and the scale to 90. Then move the CTI to the end of the clip and set a keyframe for Scale and set it to 110. Let's preview the result.

To finish the effect, we'll add the BCC Light Sweep on top of the text element and animate the light so that it appears to scan over the text toward the end of the animation.

Go to the BCC 5 Lights category in the Effects tab of the Browser window, and drag the BCC Light Zoom filter on top of the text track in the timeline. Then go to the Filters tab in the Source Monitor window - this is where we control the light parameters. Move the CTI to the middle of the clip so that we can see the text over the Map image. To position the light source so that it is over the text, set X=0 and Y=300. Then change the Direction parameter to 0 so that the light is vertical instead of horizontal.

fCP

Next set the position X of the light to -700. This places the light to the left of the visible text and will be the starting point for the animation. Move the CTI 8 seconds into the effect and set a keyframe for the lights Position X parameter. Then move the CTI to the end of the effect and set another keyframe for position X, but this time change the value from -700 to +700.

Now that we have completed the effect, let's render it to disc.
