User Profile: HD Heaven Conforms The Gadget Show with Avid DS and Boris Continuum Complete

Tuesday, February 23, 2010

"I couldn't imagine starting an edit without my armory of Boris Continuum Complete 6 effects. In addition to giving me the creative freedom to achieve great looks when working on commercials, Boris and Avid have worked hard to provide a really effective conform path, too. That makes our online finishing of The Gadget Show, which is all offlined on Media Composer systems, far smoother, with BCC transitions and effects all coming across within the AFE."
- Tony Quinsee-Jover, owner, HD Heaven

This Old House Nails Show Packaging and Promos with BCC 6 AE

Tuesday, January 5, 2010

This Old House TV was awarded an Emmy for its New Orleans Project episode, which featured the rebuilding of an 1892 Creole-style shotgun home located in Lower Ninth Ward that was badly damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Throughout its 30-year history, This Old House has earned a grand total of 17 Emmy Awards and garnered an impressive 82 nominations. The production crew traveled from Massachusetts to New Orleans to capture this story and other stories of the city's revival.

Michael Svirsky, Post Production Supervisor in their Concord, MA facility, is often tasked with creation of packaging and show promos on short notice. When the news of an award came in, he had to act fast. An animated bug with the Emmy logo and This Old House brand had to be created in time for the next episode.

Michael's tools of choice are Adobe After Effects and Boris Continuum Complete 6 AE, both installed on his trusty Apple MacBook Pro laptop. He already used Boris Continuum Complete 6's new 3D extrusion features on a number of occasions and this time it was going to be a lifesaver. Fortunately, an EPS version of an Emmy logo was readily available, and the BCC Extruded EPS filter did the rest...

Customer Profile: John MacGibbon of PBS's Frontline

Wednesday, November 11, 2009

FRONTLINE is American public television's flagship public affairs series. Hailed upon its debut on PBS as "the last best hope for broadcast documentaries," FRONTLINE's stature over 27 seasons is reaffirmed each week through incisive documentaries covering the scope and complexity of the human experience.

The responsibility for creating FRONTLINE's promos and packaging materials falls to John MacGibbon, winner of two national Emmy awards in the last two years and a recent nominee for two additional Emmys, and writer/producer Missy Frederick. John has worked with Boris FX products since his days at ZOOM, a children's show also produced by WGBH. He exclusively relies on Boris RED for all of his titling and graphics work. John also uses Boris Continuum Complete in his work on the series packaging and promos; he makes extensive use of BCC Film Grain, BCC DeNoise, BCC Lens Flare, and BCC's color and blur effects. These products help him create imagery that matches the program's cutting-edge journalism.

Rev13 Films and BCC help bring Reel Injun to Toronto International Film Festival

Friday, October 30, 2009

"We were excited that Boris Continuum Complete's UpRez filter worked as well or better than the hardware scalers, even when viewed off a 2K projector in a large theatre. This simplified our workflow tremendously and provided us with more flexibility. For some material the UpRez was so clean we had people questioning if we had actually pulled the shots from the original negative!" - Tony Manolikakis, creative director, Rev13 Films

BCC 6 Used on "The Hurt Locker" Trailer

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

Martin Zwanzger proves that you don't need to run a million dollar film studio in order to work on big movies. Out of his home office in Nuremberg, Germany, Martin offers his services for all kinds of graphics, post production, film, and VFX work. His customers include ScanlineVFX, ARRI Film & TV, Constantin Film, and Concorde Filmverleih, working on projects such as "The Chronicles of Narnia 2" , "300" , and "Iron Man" . One of his common jobs is creating title animations and movie trailers. For this he generally uses Adobe After Effects.

"One of the big advantages of After Effects is that there's such a large amount of additional tools out there. If you need anything specific, you can often just add that feature by downloading and purchasing a plug-in - no need to wait for a product update or switch to a completely different application. In this business it's important to stay up-to-date and be able to meet customer's expectations concerning specific effects. That's why I always try to follow what's going on in the plug-in market," says Zwanzger. "When Boris FX introduced Continuum Complete 6 and I heard about the new 3D text features, I had to check it out immediately. I was just working on the title sequence for a feature film and also on a 3D movie trailer, so the timing was perfect. With BCC 6 I was able to create real 3D text animations without ever having to leave AE."

Digital Kitchen Standardizes on Boris Continuum Complete

Wednesday, April 29, 2009

Digital Kitchen is a creative agency that focuses on film production, experiential design, motion graphics, brand identity, and interactive work for marketing and entertainment. With studios in New York, Chicago, Seattle, and Los Angeles, Digital Kitchen has created experiential campaigns for Target and Microsoft, broadcast spots for hundreds of leading brands, interactive work for AT&T, Budweiser, and Mercedes, the Emmy Award-winning main titles for "Dexter" and "Six Feet Under", a series of manga comic books for Nike, and the live show content for The 2008 Webby Awards.

To give its artists a wide range of tools and plug-ins in one unified visual effects suite, Digital Kitchen recently standardized on Boris Continuum Complete AE for Adobe After Effects, investing in 65 licenses including 20 render-only licenses. User Story: Emile Tobenfeld a.k.a. Doctor

Monday, June 30, 2008

I have thought of myself as an artist (photographer, electronic musician, videographer, VJ, etc.) since I left graduate school (Ph. D, in Physics) in 1970. I have (like most artists) supported myself with day jobs. Since 1984, these jobs have involved making tools for artists to use - first as the founder and chief engineer of Doctor T's Music Software, a pioneering MIDI software company, and, more recently, with Boris FX. I've been a software engineer and visual effects designer with Boris since 1997.

I purchased Final Effects (directly from Sweden) when it first came out in 1995. I've been using Boris Continuum Complete (and its predecessors) since we started developing them during my first year with Boris. It has been a pleasure to work with both products as both artist and developer, and a special pleasure to add some new twists to old favorites such as FEC Kaledia and FEC Radial Scale Wipe...

New Boris Continuum Complete User Story: Rev13 Films

Tuesday, December 18, 2007

Rev13 Films is a boutique post-production and production facility. Recently, the dynamic Montreal-based production company Rezolution Pictures International asked Rev13 Films to do the finishing for a high-octane, documentary-style car show they were producing called RezRides. They wanted a very powerful and engaging opener for the show. Creatively the producers wanted the feeling of light and movement, as if the cars were precious diamonds or metals that reflected, streaked and even emanated light. Rev13 Films turned to Boris Continuum Complete to create the lights, glows, and streaks...
