What is the oldest text animation effect in film history? You guessed right: the credit roll. Traditionally, a long page of text is rolled from the bottom of the screen revealing line after line. In the early days of cinematography, a paper print was physically rolled before the film camera to produce this effect. Hence the name: Credit Roll.
A complete set of tools for creating credit rolls is included with Boris Graffiti, Boris RED, and Boris Blue. The same functionality is available in Boris Calligraphy which is bundled with Apple Final Cut Pro and Boris Title Toolkit which is available for Adobe After Effects.

What good is a snow effect if the snow does not stick to the horizontal surfaces in the shot? The Boris Continuum Complete Snow filter can make snow do just that, creating a realistic look for your wintry scenes. The BCC Snow generator is featured in just about every Boris product, including Boris Continuum Complete, Graffiti, RED, and Boris FX. It works especially well with text captions, creating snow that accumulates on top of the letters for a natural look. Best of all, BCC allows you to create this effect right in your NLE!

For this tutorial, we're going to use the BCC Glint filter to add star-shaped glints to a portion of an image clip. The clip that we are working with features two children, a boy and a girl, sitting beside each other on a wicker bench. The children each hold a glass in their hands and the glass that the girl is holding is reflecting light from the sun. We are going to add a few glints to the reflection on the glass that the girl is holding. We'll then use BCC's PixelChooser masking system to contain the effect to just the specular highlight on this glass and we'll also use the built-in motion tracker to lock the mask onto the glass over the length of the clip. We're using the Autodesk flame system on Linux for this exercise, but this effect could be accomplished just as easily in any of the other Autodesk systems such as the flint, inferno, smoke, fire or combustion...

Ever needed to fix a clip where an unwanted or unexpected object appears in the scene? A car is suddenly passing across or a stage hand got in the shot by accident? And re-shooting is expensive or impossible? You would be facing hours of tedious frame-by-frame rotoscoping to get rid of the pesky element in your video...
But not with Boris RED or Boris Continuum Complete! As long as the object is moving in relation to the scene, this job can be done in minutes instead of days using the specialized Boris Motion Key filter. The filter is based on Optical Flow technology that uses intra-frame data to cleanly remove any moving object.
In this week's tutorial, we will use Boris Continuum Complete 5 AE's Motion Key filter to successfully remove a moving foreground object from a clip in Adobe Premiere Pro CS3.

Tired of using the same old text templates? They came bundled with your NLE and they looked great the first time, but now you need something custom-made. Boris Graffiti can solve this problem. Although Graffiti comes with even more ready-to-use templates, it also gives you tools to make your own titles and backdrop graphics.
Vector text looks sharp at any size and project aspect. But what about a backdrop? If it is a raster image made in an external application, then it will not look so sharp when it is stretched to fit text or a larger-size HD project. Boris Graffiti allows you to build vector-based backdrops to match the text. Let's see how it's done...

A Boris FX customer recently wrote:
"I'm a Boris user who has a Windows machine with a good NVIDIA graphics card, and I now hear that BLUE version 2 can be used as a plug-in for Avid. You say Boris BLUE does 3D, right? Well, what if I already have Boris Graffiti, Boris FX, Boris RED, or Avid FX? I know some of those products already offer 3D Text and some offer 3D shapes. Why would I want Boris BLUE if I already have something like the latest version of RED or Avid FX?"
Dirk de Jong, the Product Manager for Boris Blue, responds:
- BLUE gives you much more speed for both previewing effects and rendering effects. It uses NVIDIA graphics cards for accelerated GPU rendering and preview.
- BLUE gives you much more sophisticated 3D looks because it has more advanced 3D lighting, more advanced Materials for 3D surfaces, true 3D shape deformers for all shapes, and custom bevels and extrusion faces for extruded objects.
- BLUE gives you fast, powerful 3D Particle Emitters for realistic simulation of smoke, fire, and sparks or creation of animated backgrounds and other graphic elements.
- BLUE gives you the ability to import 3D model files such as .3ds and .obj geometry files, preserving individual geometry groups and maintaining editable texture and bump maps. This gives you access to an infinite number of new 3D shapes for your 3D effects.
- BLUE gives you advanced 3D Camera features including the ability to animate a camera along a user defined bezier path. Have a camera stay focused on a specific 3D point or track another 3D object as its target while moving through 3D space.
- BLUE gives you better interface tools for composing 3D effects. The BLUE Composite Window offers split views for simultaneously viewing and adjusting your 3D scene from multiple perspectives. BLUE also gives you improved 3D interactors for better manipulating objects (Cameras, Lights, 3D objects) in 3D space.

In a recent tutorial, we took a still image file of a world map, and used BCC LED to transform it into a wall of blinking LED lights. Then, we used BCC DVE to spin the image 50 degrees along the Y axis to place it at an angle to the viewer. To continue the effect, we'll take the same image and add a particle filter to make the lights appear as though they are being sprayed onto the wall, creating a blinking and glowing LED map over time.

New Boris Continuum Complete 5 Tutorial includes 20 Free Apple Final Cut Pro 6 Projects
Quickly design and animate your own unique video backgrounds by combining BCC 5 FxPlug's new Prism filter with your favorite Apple Final Cut Pro Generator...
BCC 5's new Prism filter is typically used to simulate the photographic effect of chromatic aberration in which a bad lens can generate prismatic color fringing along edges of high contrast within an image. This filter is part of the new OpenGL category of BCC filters which benefit from hardware acceleration to reduce render time.
BCC Prism can also be applied to popular generators such as Clouds, Texture, Grid, Gradient, Membrane, and Particles to give them a completely new look. This special new filter can be used with generators from any BCC 5-supported host or even Boris' own generators, but we chose Apple Final Cut Pro 6 because we wanted to show you just how nicely BCC operates within Apple's new FxPlug architecture.

Boris Continuum Complete 5's new LED filter is designed to make an image, clip, or text element with alpha appear as though it was constructed out of an array of blinking or solid LED lights similar to the display boards seen in today's sports stadiums. By default, the lights take their color from the clip to which they are applied and can be set to either square or round diodes or "bulbs". Alternately, the filter can apply a tint of color over the media element to which it is applied. BCC LED is a part of the new OpenGL category of Boris Continuum Complete filters which benefit from hardware acceleration; all of the processing is done by the graphics card GPU instead of the CPU, greatly improving performance while working with the filters and significantly reducing render times.
In this week's tutorial, we'll use Apple Final Cut Pro to generate an HD format show opener for a news program that incorporates a world map in the background. We will treat the world map image with Boris Continuum Complete 5's new LED filter to make it appear as though it was made out of LED bulbs. Read the tutorial
