Podcast: Generate a Volumetric Light Effect on Animated Text

Friday, January 9, 2009

In this new podcast, we use Boris Continuum Complete's Rays Cartoon filter to generate a volumetric lighting effect on an animated text element. The BCC Rays Cartoon filter will also give the text the appearance of being made of neon lights. We'll complete the effect by using the BCC Light Sweep to add a light sweep across the face of the text element and then we'll use the BCC Colorize Glow filter to provide a soft glowing look.

User Story: Emile Tobenfeld a.k.a. Doctor

Monday, June 30, 2008

I have thought of myself as an artist (photographer, electronic musician, videographer, VJ, etc.) since I left graduate school (Ph. D, in Physics) in 1970. I have (like most artists) supported myself with day jobs. Since 1984, these jobs have involved making tools for artists to use - first as the founder and chief engineer of Doctor T's Music Software, a pioneering MIDI software company, and, more recently, with Boris FX. I've been a software engineer and visual effects designer with Boris since 1997.

I purchased Final Effects (directly from Sweden) when it first came out in 1995. I've been using Boris Continuum Complete (and its predecessors) since we started developing them during my first year with Boris. It has been a pleasure to work with both products as both artist and developer, and a special pleasure to add some new twists to old favorites such as FEC Kaledia and FEC Radial Scale Wipe...

There are several BCC 5 filters that were designed to produce the glow effect that is very popular for sports broadcast and commercial spots. In this new tutorial, we will use BCC 5 AE in Adobe After Effects CS3 to give you an overview of the BCC Glow, BCC Colorize Glow, and BCC Glow Alpha Edges filters. These same filters are available for Avid and Apple Final Cut Pro editors with a similar workflow using BCC 5 AVX and BCC 5 FxPlug. In addition, the glow filters are included with RED 4.2, Boris FX 9.2, and Graffiti 5.2.

New Boris Continuum Complete User Story: Rev13 Films

Tuesday, December 18, 2007

Rev13 Films is a boutique post-production and production facility. Recently, the dynamic Montreal-based production company Rezolution Pictures International asked Rev13 Films to do the finishing for a high-octane, documentary-style car show they were producing called RezRides. They wanted a very powerful and engaging opener for the show. Creatively the producers wanted the feeling of light and movement, as if the cars were precious diamonds or metals that reflected, streaked and even emanated light. Rev13 Films turned to Boris Continuum Complete to create the lights, glows, and streaks...

Create a Green Screen Effect with the Boris Chroma Key Filter

Tuesday, October 9, 2007

In this week's tutorial, we illustrate how to create a green screen effect using the BCC Chroma Key filter. BCC Chroma Key is used for compositing camera footage shot using a blue, green, or orange screen as a backdrop over a new background video or a still image from a separate file. BCC Chroma Key and other keying and matte filters are included as part of Boris FX 9.1, Boris RED 4.1, and Boris Continuum Complete 5.

Part II: Use BCC Filters to Generate a News Show Opener

Wednesday, September 26, 2007

In a recent tutorial, we took a still image file of a world map, and used BCC LED to transform it into a wall of blinking LED lights. Then, we used BCC DVE to spin the image 50 degrees along the Y axis to place it at an angle to the viewer. To continue the effect, we'll take the same image and add a particle filter to make the lights appear as though they are being sprayed onto the wall, creating a blinking and glowing LED map over time.

Creative Mac calls BCC 5 an "Absolute Buy"

Monday, September 24, 2007

"Boris Continuum Complete 5 is an exceptional plug-in set for Apple Final Cut Pro and Motion, and I could go on for hours about all the effects and how great they are. The amount of thought that went into this plug-in set is obvious, and Boris is moving this plug-in set forward by leaps and bounds. Don't let the $895 price tag scare you away, as there are a few plug-ins in this set that if you were to buy separately, would almost cost you the same as BCC 5 itself. For all the users of Boris Continuum Complete who haven't upgraded to version five, what are you waiting for, and for everyone else, head on over to www.borisfx.com to download the free demo. You won't be disappointed."

Need a Background for your Video, Text, Graphics, or Pictures?

Thursday, September 6, 2007

New Boris Continuum Complete 5 Tutorial includes 20 Free Apple Final Cut Pro 6 Projects

Quickly design and animate your own unique video backgrounds by combining BCC 5 FxPlug's new Prism filter with your favorite Apple Final Cut Pro Generator...

BCC 5's new Prism filter is typically used to simulate the photographic effect of chromatic aberration in which a bad lens can generate prismatic color fringing along edges of high contrast within an image. This filter is part of the new OpenGL category of BCC filters which benefit from hardware acceleration to reduce render time.

BCC Prism can also be applied to popular generators such as Clouds, Texture, Grid, Gradient, Membrane, and Particles to give them a completely new look. This special new filter can be used with generators from any BCC 5-supported host or even Boris' own generators, but we chose Apple Final Cut Pro 6 because we wanted to show you just how nicely BCC operates within Apple's new FxPlug architecture.

Use BCC Filters to Generate a News Show Opener

Monday, August 27, 2007

Boris Continuum Complete 5's new LED filter is designed to make an image, clip, or text element with alpha appear as though it was constructed out of an array of blinking or solid LED lights similar to the display boards seen in today's sports stadiums. By default, the lights take their color from the clip to which they are applied and can be set to either square or round diodes or "bulbs". Alternately, the filter can apply a tint of color over the media element to which it is applied. BCC LED is a part of the new OpenGL category of Boris Continuum Complete filters which benefit from hardware acceleration; all of the processing is done by the graphics card GPU instead of the CPU, greatly improving performance while working with the filters and significantly reducing render times.

In this week's tutorial, we'll use Apple Final Cut Pro to generate an HD format show opener for a news program that incorporates a world map in the background. We will treat the world map image with Boris Continuum Complete 5's new LED filter to make it appear as though it was made out of LED bulbs. Read the tutorial
